Some Protohistoric houses were semi-subterranean. The floor was recessed slightly below the ground surface. The walls consisted of posts spaced about 20 cm apart in a rectangular pattern. The walls and the steep roof were covered with thatch, bundles of long grass. Like earlier houses, a small fireplace may have been positioned near the middle of the single large room. Small pits, probably used to store food, were found along the inside portion of the wall. Archaeologists often find a variety of objects on house floors. The distribution of tools and containers provides information about where people prepared food, slept, made objects, and repaired tools.
