Beaver bowl Wood

Wooden bowl carved in the form of a beaver. (Kaskaskia tribe, pre-1797)

They make all Their utensils of wood. . . . (Jacques Marquette, 1674)

Although Jacques Marquette states that wooden utensils were commonly made by the Illinois, few of these objects are preserved in museum collections. Wooden objects include platters used to serve food, carved animal-effigy bowls, and handles that were attached to stone knives and other tools.
