Once prairie plants are established in a prairie, they provide a good habitat for grassland birds. Many birds are very habitat-specific. They live only in places that specifically suit their needs. Some of the birds found in grasslands are permanent residents. Others nest there in the summers. Some fly through on their way farther north, and again when they fly south for the winter. Here are a few of the birds that can be seen in prairie habitats in Illinois.

Bobolink

Eastern Meadowlark

Henslow's Sparrow

Northern Harrier

Greater Prairie Chicken

Short-eared Owl

Upland Sandpiper

Grasshopper Sparrow
