The
forests of Illinois have been an inspiration to visual artists such as
painters and sculptors since settlers arrived here in the eighteenth century.
Some artists rendered a realistic view of the forests they saw. Others
expressed their feelings for the forest through abstract forms. As you
compare and contrast these examples from the Museum's collection, think
about the makers' attitudes and feelings toward the forest, and also about
your own feelings.
An activity for this Human Inspiration section is Forest as Inspiration for Literature. Also see Art module activities on Making Connections and Visual Thinking Skills.
