The packing process was slow and careful, but this was only one of the steps in the process. Before wrapping each doll, the curator wrote a short description and tagged the doll with a number, which was then copied onto the larger box in which the doll was placed. She entered each description into a lap-top computer to create an inventory of what they packed. After three days they realized that it would be impossible to complete the work in one session. In all, five trips were made to the Chicago apartment between November 1995 and March 1996, most lasting at least two days.
