6 New Orleans

So Nicholas Michael Chassin and Agnes Philippe became husband and wife. They had two daughters, Charlotte and Madeline. Three years later, in 1725, when Agnes' mother died, Agnes inherited a pair of oxen, two large pigs, extended supplies of wheat, peas, and gunpowder----and two sisters, who came to live with the Chassins. The family's time together on the frontier was short, however.

Soon, his employer, the Company of the Indies, recalled Chassin back to New Orleans. We have no record of what happened there. But by 1737 Nicholas was dead, and widow Agnes, who was, after all, a fine "article," married another.
