Insects are bountiful in prairie habitat. Some insects feed on flower nectar of many prairie plants. Other insects or their larvae feed on specific plants, without which they could not survive. Look closely the next time you are in a grassland area to see the many tiny creatures that abound in the soil, on the plants, and in the air. Here are a few of them.
Blazing Star Borer Moth
Sword-bearing Conehead
Dogbane Leaf Beetle
Leonard's Skipper Butterfly
Milkweed Longhorn Beetle
Northern Mole Cricket
Handsome Grasshopper
