The above mentioned uses bumb maps to create a terrain effect.. Another but more
cumbersome aproach. (an alas Windoze only) is to use a freeware program
called Terragen. This program generates terrain maps based on your input
parameters. You then have to use another program Ter2Blend to be able to import
the Terragen file into a blender file.

To create a realistic water effect, you have to create a material with a bump mapped 'stucci' texture.
Decrease the value of the alpha and press the button Ztransp in the Material menu.

Creating heightmaps is done with the 'noise' button in the Edit Buttons window (F9). First, create a mesh that is dubdivided a few times. Next, assign a texture to it that represents the heightmap.
Enter editmode and select all vertices. Click 'noise' repeatedly to offset the vertices in the z-direction.
