Quercus velutina (Black Oak)
Black Oak grows in the eastern half of the United States. It grows to 80 feet tall in sandy dry upland ridges and slopes, and on clay hillsides. This specimen shows the shiny green upper surface of the leaves and the yellow-green undersurface. The seven to nine lobes are tipped with bristle tips. The gray bark becomes thickened with rough ridges. Acorns are about 3/4" long and have a deep cup. Black oak's yellow inner bark was used to make medicine and dye.
