Quercus stellata (Post Oak)
The post oak grows in the southeastern quadrant of the United States, from lower Massachusetts to Florida, and south of a line just north of the Ohio River. It grows in sandy and gravelly soils, on rocky ridges, and along streams in moist, loamy soils. It can grow as a shrub or as tall as 70 feet tall. The rough, yet shiny, dark green leaves have deep, oblong lobes. The hairy undersides are grey-green. The acorns have a deep cap and are about an inch across.
