Zizia aurea (Golden Alexanders)
The scientific name comes from a Belgian botanist named Ziz, and the Alexander comes from the plant's association with Macedonia. Golden Alexanders grow in moist prairies. Plants are up to three feet in height. Leaves are made up of three-parts, each of which in turn is divided into three leaflets with serrated edges. Leaflets average 3" in lnegth and 1" in width. Flowers are stalked in a rounded cluster. Each yellow flower is less than 1/8" wide. It is composed of five tiny petals that curve inward and five protruding stamens. Flowering takes place from midspring to early summer. This specimen also shows the root system.
