The deep-rooted Stiff Goldenrod grows in well-drained prairies throughout the region. Plants are to five feet tall. The large basal leaves (example shown here) are up to ten inches long by 5 inches wide. Smaller stem leaves are alternate and without stalks. This species has larger (1/2") flower heads than most goldenrods. The flower head consists of 7-14 yellow ray flowers around central disk flowers that have protruding stigmas. The plant blooms from late summer into fall.
