Liatris aspera (Lacerate Blazing Star)
Lacerate (rough) Blazing Star grows in dry, rocky prairies and open upland savannas where vegetation is sparse. It grows to about four feet tall with unbranched stems. The basal leaves are long and narrow, tapering to points. The upper stem leaves are smaller. Alternate 3/4" to 1" flower heads climb the top of the stem. Each head consists of 16-35 small, purple disk flowers that have two threadlike style branches. It blooms from midsummer to fall.
