Sleepy Horse William Sommer (1867 - 1949)
watercolor on paper, 1936
William Sommer was formerly a commercial lithographer who joined the Ohio WPA murals program during the Depression. He had been painting with a group of Ohio artists who were interested in Modernist styles. The angular color planes in this composition reflect that interest.
