The Sculptor Michael Gallagher (1889 - )
woodcut on paper, circa 1941 13 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches
To make a woodcut, the artist creates a design on a paper template, transfers it to a wood plate, carves the background areas (or areas to be left uninked) away, then inks the plate and prints it. Multiple plates, each with different parts of the design carved on it, are used if there are multiple colors. The image from a woodcut are usually bolder and less finely detailed than from a wood engraving.
