Gift of Mrs. C.W.H. Schuck
This Ojibwa (Chippewa) black velvet pouch is lined in black and white gingham and red and white checked fabric. The back is black cotton. The edges are trimmed in red cotton and red braid. The front is trimmed with pale pink, rose, and green seed beads in floral motifs. Below this is a panel of red, green, and blue yarn sewn with white beads in a diamond motif. The bottom of the pouch has red, blue, and green yarn fringes, some of which are trimmed with white beads.
Pouches similar to this one are pictured in Post-contact (18th and 19th century) paintings and drawings, and more recently in paintings of Woodlands Indians by Jack Paluh. This one was purchased at Lac du Flambeau. Wisconsin on the Ojibwa (Chippewa) Reservation.
