Although the bald eagle (scientific name Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is the national bird, it is not the State Bird of Illinois.
Bald eagles are found along the larger watercourses in Illinois; they are common migrants and winter residents of the state. Although the bald eagle was recently upgraded to "Threatened" on the Federal Endangered Species list, illegal shooting is still a major threat to these birds.
