It is 1957, Efren has been in Chicago for eight months. He left his family behind, coming here in an ancient, oil-smoking car with five other men--all looking for work.

He has two jobs now, washing dishes in a restaurant and making picture frames in a small factory. Even so, he is able to make only $50 a week.
