World War II interrupted the development of modern steel and glass furniture in the 1920s as factories and materials were converted to wartime production. This practical modern style reappeared after 1945, but in a slightly changed form. Instead of plastic and steel, the furniture was made of wood by Scandinavian designers. It was known as Danish Modern and was very popular. It was imported from Denmark by stores such as Carson, Pirie, Scott and copied in Illinois by firms such as S. J. Campbell and Shelby Williams.
