Who was Ella Oelke?

Ella Oelke Sound spoke only German when she began school eight years ago. Now, in 1927, it is graduation day and she is finishing at Smith School in Henry County, a one-room school at the crossroads.

Her family lives in a rural area some distance from the nearest town and high school. At fourteen her schooling will end unless she finds a way to attend.
