Stainless steel, Bakelite
During the thirties a remarkable new plastic named "Bakelite" replaced Catalin, commonly used for the handles of cutlery and flatware. While Catalin became dull over time and often cracked when exposed to hot water, Bakelite was colorful and long-lasting. A wide variety of opaque and transparent colors were available as handles for flatware. Bakelite combined with the stainless steel, which flooded the market during the twenties, eliminated hours spent either polishing silver or scouring carbon steel blades.
