Silver plate
The squirrel perched on the rim of this nut bowl, as if feeding on nuts, is a fine example of the work done by the Rockford Silver Plate Company. The manager of this company was noted for his insistence upon high-grade wares. Pieces like this bowl would have been sold in jewelry stores or the jewelry departments of highly reputable department stores. The bottom of this bowl is marked "Quadruple plate," meaning that several layers of silver cover the base metal. Applied-relief decoration and figures like this little squirrel were quite popular in late Victorian homes.
