During the last quarter of the nineteenth century, American and European glassmakers produced some of the most inventive glassware ever made. It is known as art glass and was produced to satisfy the Victorians' love of varied color and style. Shaded opalescent glass was one of the first innovations. It was made by blowing colored glass containing bone ash and arsenic into a pattern mold to create a raised decoration on the outside. When reheated, the raised design turned an opalescent white color.
