This measure was used by the Massey family who came to Morgan County from England in 1860. Graduated wooden measures such as this apparently evolved from wooden drinking vessels known as "noggins," a word which earlier meant "block of wood" and referred to the measure of a half cup. Vinegar was used for pickling many foods, such as beets, cucumbers, lemons, mushrooms, onions, red cabbage, and walnuts.
