Rococo Revival style
Walnut
Open shelves like these held many of the prized mementoes and objects of art that decorated mid-Victorian homes. This relatively new form of furniture was needed in every "proper" parlor. Etageres, sometimes called whatnots, in the light and graceful Rococo style were manufactured at many price levels. This one was mass produced by a large Ohio firm that had a branch office in St. Louis.
