Before glass was easily and cheaply produced, stoneware jugs, crocks, and bottles were used for food storage in the home. Because of the rich clay deposits in the western part of the state, Illinois was a large producer of stoneware and earthenware items. By 1900 Illinois' production was second only to Ohio.
