Who was Father Meurin?
Father Jacques Meurin was born in 1707 in
Champagne, France. In 1742, he came to the Illinois colonies
where he worked amongst the Kaskaskia Indians as a missionary
and served the spiritual needs of the French settlers and
African slaves. Meurin was an educated person who revealed many
of his feelings and frustrations with his situation in his
letters to his superiors.
