Why were shoes so desirable?
French shoes with buckles were considered an
item of luxury and vanity in colonial Illinois. Daniel would
have worn his French shoes to mass on Sundays and other church
holidays and festivities. On a daily basis he would have worn
moccasins like the rest of the population. There were no paved
roads in Kaskaskia, only rough foot trails or roads carved out
by the constant traffic of oxen pulling carts or wagons.
