The Eagle's Day
The eagle flies high above the ground.
He soars on the wind without a sound.
He hunts all through the day.
Stopping to rest along the way.
The eagle is king of all he sees.
His throne is high up in the trees.
At the end of the day he returns to his nest.
He has earned a long nights rest.
Second Place Lydia Perrilles, Spoon River Valley, 8th Grade Of Steeples and Eagles
Through the morning mist I fly,
Sharp of beak, keen of eye.
Lost from my treetops, river, glade of green, and over the steeple, there I'm seen.
The church bell tolls, I bow my head,
Remember now the life I led.
The clear blue skies that I've winged through, the storms and dangers that past, I flew.
I hunted over rivers and fields along the way,
Catching delicate field mice and scaly fish for my prey.
When my days were young, I flew so bold,
But now I linger, feeling ever so old.
It's not the years I've flapped my wings, I have plenty of time for that.
But what has changed, so many things,
Turned so is my habitat.
I've called and some one answered.
I've stood so proud and tall,
My beak a lethal weapon, my talons sharp and keen.
But, at times I have been so very small,
And all the adventures, the things that I have seen!
I have always flown strongly, sometimes it never did show,
But I have circled many a mountain and over the valleys have flown low.
So I will always remember, where my wings have flown,
And no matter where I am, my heart is always home.
The skies are my adventure,
The world is mine to Explore.
My strong wings will carry me far,
To whatever I'm looking for.
Third Place Mary H. Leamon, Illini Central Middle School, 5th Grade I See You Eagle
I see you eagle, your wings long and broad,
Your voice high pitched and shrill,
Your blackish-brown back, you white tail, and head,
So beautiful, so lively, as I see you soaring through the sky.
I see you eagle sitting on that branch, looking down on me,
I see you eagle, and there is no bird as beautiful as you.
