Lepidoderma mazonense is a member of an extinct group of arthropods called "sea scorpions" (eurypterids). The eurypterids were important predators in the oceans of the Pennsylvanian Period.

The closest living relatives of eurypterids are the spiders and scorpions.

This animal was originally described from Mazon Creek.
