Marie Rouensa is about 45 this year, 1725. She is the daughter of a Kaskaskia Indian chief. Marie has lived her adult life in French frontier settlements.

Though 45 may seem young to us, life was often short in the Illinois country, and Marie has accepted her approaching death. She is thinking now, not of herself, but of her eight children and how she will divide her considerable legacy among them.
